About

My name is Elias Dabbas, and I was always strongly moved by percussion, beats, and rhythms in a very overwhelming way. It was always important for me to talk with good rhythm, even if it meant not speaking at all sometimes! I think one of the deepest joys we can experience is feeling the resonance and harmony in any aspect of life, and moving with it. I discovered my ability to keep good time once while playing a drum that was in our house. I then kept playing on my legs, table, or whatever surface there was. It developed further in high school where I started playing the Arabic drum, and later the drum set. The next phase was in learning dancing, which was so much like playing the drums; you have a certain beat for each type of music, a certain vocabulary you improvise from, and you fill the ends of phrases with fills as you see fit.

All the time, these instruments were not as musically satisfying as they could be, although I loved them a lot (and still do) I wanted to explore musical instruments whith melody and harmony. This when I decided to start with the musical percussion instruments, and got hooked to the marimba. Fortunately, stick control techniques apply to many aspects of the marimba, so playing the drums helps a lot in laying a foundation for mallet percussion instruments.

This blog is my journey through percussion, my thoughts, learnings, and recommendations.
